Northern to Central Plains Tornado Averages

Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming

Many of the states in the Northern to Central Plains are located in Tornado Alley. Being further north, and further away from the warmest air, the height of tornado activity takes place later than the states in the southern Plains. The seasons are shorter, and the opportunities usually is much less than further south.

However; this is also where you’ll find some of the most classic supercell structures thanks to that summertime heat. Nebraska, Wyoming, South Dakota and North Dakota all can typically expect tornado season to peak in June. Montana has about equal chances for it to be June or July.
