Tornado season in Iowa usually runs from early April to the end of June. 2022 was a busy year for tornados in Iowa, with 28 reported between March and April, with the deadliest being an EF4. There’s no denying that Iowa gets tornados. Part of the reason Iowa gets tornados is that part of the infamous Tornado Alley extends into the state. • Keep a Weather Radio Nearby – These radios are designed to alert individuals when severe weather is coming. When they sound off on average, you have about 10-15 minutes before the storm arrives, giving your family plenty of time to enact your safety plan.
• Create an Emergency Kit – An emergency kit should include batteries for your weather radio, entertainment, clothes, and enough supplies for three days per household member. These supplies can be prepared and stored in your storm shelter.
• Create a Communication Plan – Having a plan in place reduces the chance that fear takes over and results in family-wide panic. Your goal should include who is responsible for getting what supplies and ways to communicate with families and officials in case the weather turns for the worst.
